Sarah Fisher the racer would love to be in St. Petersburg, Fla., for this Sunday’s 2009 IndyCar Series season debut.
Sarah Fisher the owner knows that it’s best if she waits until the April 26 race at Kansas Speedway to start her season.
“It’s a financial thing,” said the 28-year-old Fisher. who made a stop in Topeka on Thursday. “Our focus this year is to hopefully get all the superspeedways in. Last year we did three events and we’d like to be able to double that, as a growing year. We’re working towards that and will hopefully get that done.
“It is what it is,” said Fisher, who has competed in seven Indianapolis 500s, her first when she was 19. “We’re enjoying it. It’s not disappointing to us. We’re actually very excited about being able to come to Kansas this year whereas last year we didn’t even get to do that.”
“I like having all that responsibility and I hope to one day get to the point where that’s what I’m doing mainly and we have someone who’s driving for us.”
Fisher would welcome the chance to be on equal financial footing with the Roger Penskes, Bobby Rahals. Chip Ganassis and Michael Andrettis of the IndyCar world, but she isn’t jealous of the more well-heeled teams in the series.
This Sunday, however, Fisher will be watching the Streets of St. Petersburg event on television, biding her time until the Kansas race.
