Dario Franchitti made his fuel last one corner further than Scott Dixon and the difference won the No.27 Andretti Green Racing driver the race and the 2007 IndyCar Series title. It was Franchitti’s first IndyCar championship. TheSportsNetwork
The two leaders, who came into the season-finale at Chicagoland Speedway with Franchitti leading the standings by just three points, both stopped to top off their 22-gallon fuel tanks during a caution 54 laps from the end on the 1 1/2-mile oval.
It looked as if Dixon, the 2003 series champion, was going to pull it off, taking the lead when Chip Ganassi Racing teammate Dan Wheldon ran out of fuel on lap 194 of the 200-lap event. AP.org
Franchitti, the Indianapolis 500 winner who is reportedly poised to jump to the popular NASCAR stock car racing series next season, started the race with a three-point lead atop the standings and finished with 637 points to claim his first IndyCar championship.
Dixon finished 13 points behind Franchitti. AFP
