The IRL yesterday announced a series of adjustments teams can make to their cars for the rest of the season in an effort to improve handling and make passing easier for cars on oval tracks.
The IRL laid out a series of mechanical improvements that teams will be allowed to add individually or collectively, at their comfort level, in a bid to increase downforce on the cars. Richmond Times Dispatch
Scott Dixon described the IndyCar Series race at Richmond International Raceway as “a bit of a procession, unfortunately,” and said the 300-lap event was frustrating because the lack of passing made it more closely resemble a parade.

And he made those comments Saturday night after ending up in Victory Lane.
Teammate and runner-up Dario Franchitti apologized to fans for an “awful, awful race,” while Graham Rahal said he only passed two cars all night while finishing third. Auto Racing Daily
Teams will be allowed to add rear tire ramps, sidepod extenders and wheel end fills, or backing plates. These items can be used individually or collectively, at the team’s comfort level.
League officials project an increase of 300 pounds of aerodynamic downforce if all three items are used, although some team representatives questioned if that amount can be achieved.
In general, downforce should make it easier for the drivers to use different racing lines. Indianapolis Star
