An apparent failure in the gearbox of the #26 XM Satellite Radio Acura sidelined the Andretti Green Racing entry at Saturday’s running of the Utah Grand Prix. The Acurapowered machine driven by Marino Franchitti got off to a quick start gaining four positions on the opening lap and eventually leading the LMP2 category before suffering the fatal failure only 20 laps into the event.
The failure occurred before Bryan Herta, lead driver of the XM Acura, was able to get into the car. Ryan Briscoe and Sascha Maassen captured the overall race victory as well as the LMP2 class win.
Allan McNish and Rinaldo Capello finished second overall and first in LMP1.
The next race on the American Le Mans Series schedule is the Northeast Grand Prix on Saturday, July 7, from the 1.54-mile, eight-turn circuit at Lime Rock Park. CBS Sports will provide television coverage on a tape-delayed basis beginning at 1 p. m. (EDT) on Sunday, July 8.
Bryan Herta, #26 XM Satellite Radio Acura:
“There really isn’t too much to say other than this is a very disappointing finish to the weekend. The XM Satellite Radio Acura was running well and it looked like there was a good chance for us to score some points and get a good result but unfortunately the gearbox failed. It was a long way to come to get nothing. We’ll just have to refocus during the break on doing some testing and get ready for Lime Rock when the schedule resumes in July. “
Marino Franchitti, #26 XM Satellite Radio Acura:
“I’m very disappointed for the entire XM Satellite Radio crew. I think the team did a fantastic job on a type of track that was completely new to us, especially after running on all the street circuits. I’m especially disappointed for Bryan (Herta). He’s still in the hunt for the driver championship and it’s a shame we weren’t able to finish the race. Acura gave us great power this weekend and we were running up front. We continue to learn and we’re really looking forward to Lime Rock. “
