Australian racer Ryan Briscoe is convinced he will be a major contender for this year’s US IndyCar series title.
Briscoe, who will race for the powerful Penske team along with countryman Will Power, has defending champion Scott Dixon of New Zealand in his sights and believes he can overhaul him.
“I do, actually,” Briscoe said on Thursday. “At any of the tracks at the end of the year I could have gone head-to-head with Dixon.
“He was definitely the man last year and he’s probably going to be the one to beat again this year, there are no signs of him letting up.
“If I continue into this year with what I learned and achieved last year and keep focused and keep improving I’m a shot.”
“I finished strong but certainly didn’t kick off the year with good consistent results - I hate putting things down to luck, but it was just terrible.
“I couldn’t catch a break at the beginning of the year.”
Again the highlight of his year will be the famed Indianapolis 500 race, in which he has finished fifth and 10th in recent years.
