Helio Castroneves, Briscoe’s Penske Racing teammate, is winning races after putting his legal problems behind him, fan favorite Danica Patrick is having her best season yet, and Target Chip Ganassi Racing teammates Scott Dixon and Dario Franchitti, the last two series champions, have consistently run at the front.

Despite all that star power, Briscoe is the driver leading the season standings as the IndyCar Series enjoys a week off after six of 17 races.

“That’s what it’s all about, the championship,” said Briscoe, who has the series lead for the first time in his career.

The 27-year-old Australian will go into the race June 21 at Iowa Speedway leading Dixon, 199-196. Franchitti is third with 188, followed by Castroneves with 186 and Patrick with 167.

He has led in five of the six races for a total of 424 laps, including 160 at Texas and 154 at Milwaukee, where Dixon won two weeks ago. That’s nearly halfway to the series record of 899 laps led, set by Dixon last year when he won the championship.

Briscoe is the only driver to complete every lap so far this year, and he has been running at the finish in 12 consecutive races, dating to late last season.
