SI Misrepresents Danica in “Patrick Eyeing NASCAR” Story

In a story written by Bruce Martin and published on Sports Illustrated’s website Danica Patrick is portrayed to be “eyeing NASCAR.” But the article begins with a leading question asking Patrick if the “Hulman-George family feud may provide Patrick with the nudge she needs to jump to NASCAR.”

Patrick apparently answered that the stability of the IndyCar Series would factor into her decision. She was not referring to “NASCAR” specifically when she answered the question and even made an effort to clarify that she would look at any and all options.

Mr. Martin was able to quote Patrick directly later in the article regarding her feelings toward the Indy Car Series’ stability issues but he could not quote her regarding NASCAR - yet he still used that as his title.

Perhaps Mr. Martin went to the Bill O’Reilly school of Journalism or the editors at SI were on vacation.

Interesting that this is the article immediately following SI’s print edition article which quotes Danica saying that cheating is not cheating unless you get caught.

All this from the magazine that had to photoshop off Danica’s tattoo so she would be acceptable to their swimsuit-edition audience. I wonder if SI has been busy removing tattoos of NBA players so they can “appropriately” cover the NBA Finals? Click Here To Read More

In an interview with Dan Patrick published in Sports Illustrated, Danica Patrick was asked, if she could take a performance-enhancing drug and not get caught, would she do it if it allowed her to win the Indianapolis 500.

“Well, then it’s not cheating, is it? If nobody finds out?” she said.

Dan Patrick responded: “So you would do it?”

Danica’s answer: “Yeah, it would be like finding a gray area. In motorsports, we work in the gray areas a lot. You’re trying to find where the holes are in the rule book.”

Danica Patrick later said her answers were a joke and she apologized if they came across differently.

“It was a bad joke,” she said in an interview that appeared in USA Today. “There is a lot of sensitivity in our culture about (performance-enhancing drugs). With all the baseball stuff, I’ve followed it and this is a real problem. It’s a shame kids think they have to do this to get ahead. It’s very dangerous.” Click Here To Read More
