You CAN drive an an Indy Race Experience car around the Speedway flat out without braking , but a lifetime’s habit of braking for highway off-ramps is difficult to shake.
The ‘Indy 500’ will take place May 27 and I plan to be this there and feeling just a little smug. You see, I know what it’s like to lap the Speedway in an Indy car.
Okay, I wasn’t racing and went half the speed of the pros but I did go foot-to-the-floor down the straight and didn’t (well hardly) lift going into Turn One, four times, four laps, in what I regard as my own personal ‘Indy 10’(Miles).
The ‘Indy Racing Experience’ Drive Program offers anyone over 18 with a driver’s license and US $399 four laps around The Speedway at speeds over 160 kph.
First you sign waivers indemnifying everybody and everything and listing next of kin and personal physician. Butterflies the size of condors lap of your stomach.
In a garage under the grandstands, you don flameproof overalls and racing boots. Then, you walk out (It’s hard not to strut. ) of ‘Gasoline Alley’ to join aspiring Andrettis, Indy Racing Experience crew members and loved ones in Pit Lane and dwarfed by a canyon of grandstands which today hold only sunshine. (The IRE doesn’t run in the rain, in temperatures below degrees 10 degrees C., or in high winds).
