IndyCar Series championship leader and Andretti Green Racing driver Dario Franchitti will hold an eight-point lead over Ganassi Racing driver Scott Dixon and a 52-point cushion over fellow AGR competitor Tony Kanaan when drivers debut on the winding road course known as Infineon Raceway Sunday.
Kanaan took his series-leading fourth and second straight victory last time out at Kentucky Speedway Aug. 11. Dixon won the three races previous to Kanaan’s Aug. 5 win at Michigan International Speedway. Two of Dixon’s wins came on the road courses at Mid-Ohio Raceway July 22 and Watkins Glen International Raceway June 30. Franchitti opened the door for his championship competitors with a 13th-place Michigan finish and an eighth-place Kentucky performance. He has charted a total of three wins, 11 top-five and 13 top-10 finishes through 14 of 17 events this season. Dixon has matched Franchitti’s totals and Kanaan owns a total of 10 top-five and top-10 finishes.
The top 10 drivers in the series standings entering the Sonoma, Calif., race are: Franchitti (Leader: 518 points, Andretti Green Racing), Dixon (Second: -8, Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates), Kanaan (Third: -52, Andretti Green Racing), Dan Wheldon (Fourth: -130 Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates), Sam Hornish, Jr., (Fifth: -139, Team Penske), Helio Castroneves (Sixth: -160, Team Penske), Scott Sharp (Seventh: -171, Rahal Letterman Racing), Danica Patrick (Eighth: -181, Andretti Green Racing), Marco Andretti (Ninth: -207, Andretti Green Racing) and Tomas Scheckter (10th: -214, Vision Racing). All machines are Dallara/Honda/Firestone entries.
