The 27-year-old Australian, Ryan Briscoe has never finished higher than fifth in the standings, but after a breakout season in 2008 and a season-opening victory at St. Petersburg this year, the Team Penske driver has firmly established himself as one of the serious contenders for the title.
“Obviously the championship is what we’re after, but I’m a firm believer that to win the championship you need to win races,” Briscoe said partway through this season, which has him battling for the title with his Penske teammate and last year’s runner-up Helio Castroneves, plus Target Chip Ganassi teammates Scott Dixon, the 2008 winner, and Dario Franchitti who won in 2007. Briscoe didn’t take long to make his return a success, winning the Milwaukee Mile.

A year later, Briscoe is at the top of his game, is looking forward to the Rexall Edmonton Indy and is feeling a lot better about his career, even though he admits to having doubts during his rehabilitation.
“Yeah, for sure, (he was worried)” said Briscoe. “You don’t have a solid ride, you’re not with a top team and you think, ‘I wonder how my career is going to keep going.’”
“There are always sort of backup options, maybe back in Australia and stuff, but it was a bit premature really for what my original plan would have been.”
Instead, Briscoe is now on his way to his best season ever with one of open-wheel racing’s best teams ever.
When Roger Penske showed faith in his abilities, Briscoe answered with solid performances.

“It’s just incredible,” said the 27-year-old. “You know, I don’t know how to put it into words. You can never really give up, because you never know what might come around the next corner.” Edmonton Sun
