Tony Kanaan does not have burns on his hands from a cockpit fuel fire in last weekend’s Rexall Edmonton IndyCar race and plans to drive Sunday at Kentucky Speedway,
Kanaan, the Brazilian driver for Andretti Green, was injured on his first pit stop on the 34th lap when the ethanol fuel hose failed to shut off properly, showering him and his car in fuel. ESPN
Other than a burn on the right side of his nose and missing eyebrows and eyelashes, he said Monday that he is fine.
“It’s like I got popped with a little firecracker at home,” he said following a doctor’s visit in Miami. “It’s not horrible.”

Kanaan’s hands were bandaged after the race and he was unsure what to expect Monday. But they “look normal,” he said.
Kanaan said this was his first true bout with fire during a race.
“There was a big splash (of fuel) and for sure I knew right away there was a fire,” he said. “I didn’t want to catch fire in front of the whole crew, so I pulled away because I knew I was better protected than my guys were.” Indianapolis Star
Dario Franchitti had tears in his eyes when he saw his friend and racing rival Tony Kanaan, his hands heavily bandaged and a burn on his chin—the grim reminders of a horrifying fire on pit lane during Sunday’s Rexall Edmonton Indy.
Franchitti had just finished fifth in a race won by Will Power of Australia and was talking to a reporter when he saw Kanaan in a golf-kart.

Franchitti stopped the interview and gave Kanaan a hug, whispering in his ear that “it’s over,” referring to a streak of bad luck that has plagued Kanaan in the IndyCar Series this season. “It comes in threes,” Franchitti said, referring to the bad luck. “I’m just so happy to see you. But you can’t lift a finger with those hands.” SI.com
