Video: Power And Phillipe Both Hospitalized After IndyCar Practice Accident

Team Penske’s Will Power and Nelson Philippe from Conquest Racing were both injured after being involved in a three-car crash during Saturday’s practice session for the Indy Grand Prix of Sonoma at Infineon Raceway.

Power sustained two compression fractures in his lower back, while Philippe suffered an open fracture to his left foot.  They were transported to nearby Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital. MiamiHerald.com

Both drivers also had concussions in the mishap, which occurred when Philippe spun out at the exit of Turn 3a and came to a stop on the left side of the track. E.J. Viso clipped the front of Philippe’s car with his left-rear tire. Power couldn’t avoid the debris and hit Philippe’s car too.

“It’s a very fast and tough corner, and it’s blind, too,” said Viso, who was not hurt. “I came over the hill and just saw something green. I knew it was Nelson, but I was going through so fast. I just went to avoid him, but it’s so tough. I didn’t see much by the time I had to try and avoid the car.” San Francisco Chronicle

Coming into the event, Power was 16th on the season points list with 209.

The accident couldn’t come at a worse time for Power who won his first IndyCar race four weeks ago at Edmonton, Canada after starting from pole and leading 90 of 95 laps.

The Queenslander, who is driving for Team Penske on a race-by-race basis, was scheduled to run one more race for the team this year, at the end of the season. The Australian
