National Guard Panther Racing driver Dan Wheldon finished his second day of practice Sunday at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway with the seventh-quickest time on the final speed chart for the day. The day concluded with an incident in the fourth turn of the 1.5-mile Brickyard, as Wheldon’s No. 4 car spun as he was attempting to enter pit lane and made minor contact with the outside retaining wall.
Wheldon was cleared and released to drive following an X-ray this evening at Methodist Hospital for a deep bruise on his right foot. His top speed of the day was a 224.583 mph, 40.0742 seconds and was coming off an opening day practice where he finished fourth yesterday.
Teammate Ed Carpenter, driving the No. 20 Fuzzy’s Vodka entry that’s a collaborative effort between Panther and Vision Racing, had a productive day of running several settings on the car, and finished with the 23rd quickest time of the day.
Carpenter’s top lap was a 221.535 mph, 40.6256 seconds. He is preparing for his seventh Indianapolis 500-mile race and sixth with Vision Racing. Last season Carpenter started 17th and drove to an eighth-place finish. His best drive at Indianapolis came in 2008 when he started 10th, led his first career laps (3) and finished fifth.
