Will Power comes from Down Under, and his voice-mail message begins with the “Men at Work” song.
Thought he might like a Vegemite sandwich as he recovers from a concussion and multiple fractures to his vertebrae, which will keep him out of the cockpit for the rest of the season.
“Forget the Vegemite,” said Power, who has a great sense of humor. “My mother is here from Australia staying with me, and I got a heap of the stuff that should last me at least two years.”
Power will have to wear a back brace for the next couple of months. “Sort of like a girdle,” he said. “But it’s making my spine feel better.”
Power recalls the crash, which occurred when Philippe lost control of his car cresting a turn, spun to a stop, was clipped by E.J. Viso and then was struck by Power, who couldn’t see coming through the blind corner.
Power hit hard, and Philippe finished up with a busted ankle.
“We chatted a bit,” Power said. “He recalled a big yellow bumblebee coming at him, and having no way to escape.” Power’s No. 12 Dallara/Honda is painted yellow and carries the Penske Truck Rental sponsorship.
And his mother?
“She’s here looking after me and taking a short holiday,” Power said. “She’s never been to America. Don’t want to have people waiting on me, but I think I will ask her to make me that Vegemite sandwich now.”
