Australia s next generation of motorsport stars will be in action this weekend with the running of the 45th Yamaha Dunlop Australian Sprint Kart Champships at the Eastern Creek International Karting Raceway in Eastern Creek, Sydney, New South Wales.
Karting is one of the worlds most exciting forms of motorsport with drivers racing inches from the ground at speeds in excess of 100 km/h. It is the traditional breeding ground for the stars of tomorrows top line motorsport stars across the world.
Over the Easter weekend 433 competitors from all across Australia will converge on the spectacular Eastern Creek venue to compete across ten categories in this year s national championships.
The event set to be the largest of its type held at the venue and will have 193 local drivers from all across Sydney out to chase a national championship.
Also competing will be three drivers who two weeks ago competed in the opening round of the European Rotax Series in Salbris, France. Newcastles Hayden McBride, Victorians David Sera and Luigi Catanese flew back into Australia last Wednesday before heading to Sydney on the weekend to begin preparations for this weekends feature event.
Karting is considered the first step in any serious racer s career. It can prepare the driver for high-speed wheel-to-wheel racing by developing quick reflexes, precision, car control, set-up, mechanical and decision-making skills. People of all ages can enjoy the sport with children as young as seven competing behind the wheel. Karting teaches these children, both boys and girls, basic driving skills well before they are able to obtain their road licence.
While many people associate it with young drivers, but adults are also very active in karting.
Karting is competitive, but it is also fun and family orientated, with involvement in the sport both on and off the track giving it a strong feeling of community. It teaches driving skills and offers people an opportunity to gain a career in motorsport, all in a safe and organised environment.
The sport has provided a strong ground for many of todays stars in Australian motorsport, including the past 11 V8 Supercar Champions. Some of the other recent graduates from karting into the top level of motorsport across the globe include dual world Formula 1 champion Fernando Alonso, Aussie Formula One star Mark Webber, rising V8 supercar star James Courtney a dual world karting champion - and last start winner in the V8 Supercar championship Garth Tander.
When the National Karting Championships were last held in New South Wales at Newcastle in 2001, current V8 Supercar drivers Mark Winterbottom and Shane Price won the prestigious Clubman Light and Junior Clubman categories respectively.
The Yamaha Dunlop 45th National Sprint Kart Championships will begin with qualifying tomorrow. Racing will commence tomorrow afternoon and continue throughout Saturday with the Championship Finals being contested on Sunday April 8. Entry is free for all spectators.
The Eastern Creek International Karting Raceway is located at Brabham Drive, Eastern Creek.
