The ‘08 Outlaw Driving School’s Young Guns Shootout kicked off it’s season Saturday night at Kennedale TX. ‘ Cowtown Speedway Saturday February 9th. Nineteen Jr Mini Stock Cars were on hand to participate on the event.

Scurry, Texas resident Chris Miller driving the #98 G-Fabrication Ford Pinto took the Win in Heat 1 to earn a A-main pole, while Dodd City’ #821 of Shelby Williams sponsored by Auto-Tech Towing took the Heat 2 win.

The A-Feature provided plenty of racing action by these youngsters. From the pole starting position, Miller led the first four laps, as outside pole starter #5, the Young Guns gentleman racer Dustin Mooney of Mesquite, TX, battled with the 2z of Zac Sydney of Farmersville, with Sydney taking the lead for laps 5 & 6, while Mooney, Miller, and Wylies #135 R&B Motorsports ride of Rusty Trevathan Jr raced behind. Trevathan won that battle by gaining the lead position on lap 7.

In the meantime, #821 Shelby Williams was working his way through the field after YGS officials moved him to the rear of the field. Chris Miller had a bit of bad racing luck as he brought out the first caution flag of the race on lap 15 with his brush with the turn 3 wall. Miller was shaken a bit but is ok. On the restart, it was race leader Trevathan, lap cars of Brandon Ruffin & Cody Nichols, Sydney in 2nd, and Williams making his way to 3rd. One lap later, Sydney bought out caution 2 with a spin in turn 3, collecting Williams in the process, though Williams was able to continue. On that restart, Trevathan, Williams, Mooney, & the 2007 YGS Champion #17x Tyler Plum raced on.

Trevathan and Williams battled several laps for the lead, with score sheets showing the 821 of Williams leading lap 19, while on that lap, being slowed by lap traffic, with Trevathan retaking the lead. While Trevathan can testify lap traffic cost him a possible win last September at T-Bird, the racing gods returned the favor and Trevathan never looked back. At the checkers, it was Trevathan, Williams, Mooney, Grayson County’s Chance Whitworth, and Tyler plum rounding out the top 5.

In a post race visit with Trevathan, he told race director Tony Hernandez, “my throttle was stuck”. Hernandez reply was, “mine would have also when I seen the nose of that 821"… all Trevathan could do was smile!
Next event, Paris Motor Speedway, February 23rd.
