Apparently the offseason wasn’t long enough for NASCAR Sprint Cup Series regular Kyle Busch.
Busch, driver of Joe Gibbs Racing’s No. 18 Toyota, was at Lanier National Speedway Sunday running in the 200-lap Champion Racing Association (CRA) Super Late Model event.
After spending four days preparing for the 2009 SpeedFest at Lanier National Speedway, Kyle Busch did not leave empty-handed Sunday.
The Sprint Cup regular assumed the lead on Lap 104 from Cleveland’s Jason Hogan after a mid-race break on Lap 100 and never looked back in winning the 200-lap CRA Super Series event. In the first part of SpeedFest, Gainesville’s Greg Simpson survived a wild finish to win the 100-lap GAS Series race.
“The guys did a great job all weekend setting up the car for me,” Busch said. “It felt good the whole race and it was tough race against some really good drivers. It’s been a really fun weekend and this is a good way to finish it. I love racing on short-tracks and these Late Model cars are my favorite.”
Pole-sitter Casey Roderick led the entire way the first 100 laps holding off several attempts by Sieg to pass. Roderick, however, ran into problems on Lap 177 and did not finish the race.
Hogan came around to take second. Johanna Long of Pensacola, Fla., was third, Scott Hanz of Angola, Ind., was fourth, and Michael Pope of Dublin finished fifth.
In less than two weeks the Las Vegas native Kyle Busch will kickoff the 2009 Cup season by competing in the Budweiser Shootout all-star race at Daytona International Speedway.
