Cory Joyce started Saturday’s 35-lap Advance Auto Parts Limited Late Model feature at Hickory Motor Speedway from the outside of the front row.
A lap 19 tangle with a slower car sent him from second place to the rear of the field, however, but he charged back for a fine third place finish in the NASCAR Whelen All American Series event.
Joyce, 16, scored his tenth top five finish of the 2009 season, but the youngster says he had to do a little more work than originally planned in order to achieve that milestone.
“We had a good car tonight, but I had to work it coming from the back after we got mixed up with the lapped car. I think we had a chance until then. It got pretty intense there at the end. We were fighting pretty hard for position. Thanks to all the fans that came out to Fan Appreciation Night tonight and to my team and marketing partners for all they do for me.”
Cory and the No. 33 team will be idle for two weeks before returning to Hickory Saturday, September 5th for another night of NASCAR Whelen All-American Series racing topped off by a 35-lap feature event.
