It was the desires of a family wanting to return to familiarity that brought Jim Peterson back to Stafford Motor Speedway in 2009. On Friday, Peterson, of Monson, Mass., returned to an area at the track that he had become quite familiar with before he hung up his helmet and driver’s suit after 2007.
Peterson, who returned to the track this year after taking 2008 off, found his way back to victory lane in Friday’s 30-lap Late Model feature. Ryan Posocco of Stafford was second and Dillon Moltz of Waterford third.
“I told them if they weren’t happy, we were going to come home,” Peterson said.
“That was the tough part for me,” he said. “At first it’s all a new adventure, but once you start going to races you miss it. I was always keeping an eye on the Internet to see what was happening up here.”
Peterson was quick to show that he hadn’t forgotten the way around at Stafford, finishing worse than sixth just once in his first six events, with two seconds and a third.
Friday, Peterson passed Adam Gray for the lead on lap 9 and easily left the field behind.
