Schlup, Hubert, And Binning Claim ULMA Victories

United Late Model Association (ULMA) drivers claimed three victories last weekend out of four sanctioned events at Callaway Raceway, Lucas Oil Speedway, and Central Missouri Speedway (CMS) respectively. Jeff Schlup of California, MO rolled to his association-leading fifth victory of the season at Callaway Raceway, all of Schlup’s ULMA wins have come at the Fulton, MO track. J.D. Hubert of Cross Timbers, MO raced his way to ULMA win number four this year at Lucas Oil Speedway. Hubert’s four wins have all come at the Wheatland, MO state-of-the-art facility. Jon Binning of Warrensburg, MO notched his second series win and second this year at CMS last Saturday evening. In forty-two possible association points-earning events this season, fifteen different drivers have claimed 27 victories.

At Butler Motor Speedway (BMS) last Friday there were four member drivers present. John Fellers came away with the best finish by a ULMA-legal car in sixth position followed by Dwight Niehoff seventh and Randy Ainsworth ninth. Mark Selsor was unable to start the feature race. At BMS, association drivers compete with open late models in the track’s late model division. BMS is the western-most tip of ULMA sanctioning.

Callaway Raceway’s late model car count continued to be impressive last Friday evening when 24 drivers signed in for racing with twelve of those competitors being ULMA members. The hottest driver at the track this year continues to be Jeff Schlup who claimed another win, his fifth at the track this year, the most by any driver. As a result of his win, Schlup vaults to third in the overall standings heading into this weekend. The Hubert Brothers, Evan and J. D. made an appearance at the track and scored the next best ULMA finishes in the fifth and sixth positions. Robbie Test of Jefferson City was close behind in seventh, Bob Test and Kevin Kaiser in ninth and tenth also posted top ten finishes. According to the track schedule another weekly program is scheduled for this Friday, August 7th, if weather is an issue the races will run on Sunday, August 9th.

Lucas Oil Speedway held another weekly race program last Saturday evening with 21 late models present for action, 11 ULMA member drivers competed during the night. J.D. Hubert beat his Brother Evan to the line to take his fourth feature race at the track this season for a one-two ULMA finish. Browning, MO driver Tommy Cordray recorded another strong finish and came away with the only other top-finish by a ULMA driver in fourth. Toby Ott, Kevin Kaiser, and Matt Menzie nailed down the seventh thru ninth positions, making it six of ten member drivers in the top ten at the end of the night. The track is set for another “Countdown to the Crown” weekly event in all divisions again this Saturday.

In the previous ten feature races at CMS, there were no repeat winners. That all changed last Saturday night when Jon Binning became the first repeat late model winner of the year at the track. Binning’s second association win did not come easy however, he held off a hard-charging Randy Ainsworth for the win. The two drivers are actually tied for the track point’s championship heading into this Saturday night. Of the 14 drivers on hand, 13 were ULMA members. Behind Binning and Ainsworth with strong finishes in the top five were Steve Clancy third, Bob King fourth, and steady-running Danny Monroe in fifth. Another weekly night of racing is scheduled at the track for August 8th in all divisions.

ULMA Late Model member drivers are reminded that the only legal tire for ULMA competitors is the Hoosier D55! The Hoosier LM40 tire is NOT a legal tire for ULMA member drivers. Association officials are now on the lookout for illegal tires and any member caught with them will not register association points for the infraction, no questions and no exceptions, period! At CMS, the Hoosier D55 is the only tire authorized for competition in the late model division.

Kevin Kaiser of Cole Camp, Missouri maintains his lead over Robbie Test in second in the overall association standings. As previously mentioned Schlup vaulted to third place up from seventh place last weekend. Schlup has now amassed 15 total feature starts and will begin discarding lower finishes as he registers improved finishes during the remainder of the season. Ainsworth maintains fourth spot with Kevin Coyne of Kingsville slipping to fifth.
