It was a case of what might have been for the ING Renault F1 Team at last weekend’s Spanish Grand Prix, with all the promise of qualifying falling away in the race. The double retirement was hard to accept, but the team takes encouragement from the knowledge that progress has been made. That was evident throughout the weekend with both Fernando and Nelson progressing to Q3, and Fernando starting the race from the front row, much to the delight of the Spanish fans.
While Fernando looked set for a healthy haul of points in the race, he remained philosophical after his retirement and took heart from the fact that he had been racing competitively at the front. And with an aggressive development programme in place for the rest of the season, the Spaniard is in good spirits and ready for the next race. Nelson felt similarly at home in the revised R28 and matched Fernando for most of the weekend. His short lived race left him frustrated, but he has vowed to learn from his mistakes.
