Darren Hagen of Riverside, Calif. leads the Lucas Oil USAC National Sprint Car Series to events in Indiana Tuesday and Wednesday night. Tuesday’s race is at Twin Cities Raceway Park in North Vernon, while Wednesday’s Banjo 100 “Glen Niebel Classic” is at Anderson Speedway.
Hagen is 53 points ahead of Levi Jones and 62 ahead of Kevin Swindell, with 148 available in this week’s racing.
A 30-lap feature is on tap at the 3/8-mile dirt North Vernon oval, while Wednesday’s Anderson program includes USAC’s Kenyon Midget Car Series and concludes with a 100-lap Sprint Car feature. Dave Darland is the defending champion of the Banjo 100 “Glen Niebel Classic. ” T. E Promotions and Mason Fleetwood serve as the race organizers at North Vernon, while Rick Dawson is Anderson Speedway’s head man.
Jon Stanbrough of Jamestown, Ind. became a two-time winner of the prestigious “Tony Hulman Classic” Saturday night, winning the 37th running of the Lucas Oil USAC National Sprint Car race at the Terre Haute Action Track. Stanbrough trailed defending race winner Daron Clayton for the first 11 laps, then took command in turn two on lap 12 and led the rest of the way.
The race was halted after 24 of the 30 scheduled laps due to track curfew. Stanbrough drove the Fox Brothers Jarvis Enterprises/Foxco Racing Engines DRC and credited his crew for the win. “I’m happy for them, ” he said in victory lane. “It’s their first win in this race and I’m humbled to win it a second time. I tried to be patient in the opening laps and while Daron was running the top I tried the bottom. It worked through one and two and I was able to make up the difference there. ”
The win was Stanbrough’s sixth in a row in Indiana sprint races at five different tracks! Jerry Coons Jr., Jesse Hockett, series point leader Darren Hagen and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. filled out the “top-five” when the race was finally halted. Eric Gordon escaped injury when he flipped wildly on the backstretch during a heat race. Kevin Swindell also flipped on the eighth lap of the feature after hitting the slowing car of Robert Ballou in turn three. Stenhouse was the night’s fastest qualifier. Heats went to Hagen, Clayton and Stanbrough. Clayton retired from the race before the finish.
Stanbrough’s victory extended the number of different winners in 2007 Lucas Oil National Sprint Series competition to five in five events.
