Britain’s Hamilton is still riding high from his win in Monaco a fortnight ago, and has carried that feelgood factor across the Atlantic to the scene of his debut success.
He wants to make Canada a lucky seventh round of this year’s world championship, but Ferrari driver Massa has other ideas. “We didn’t think McLaren were unbeatable in Monaco and we think the same about Montreal,” said the Brazilian.
“We are confident. I have a good car, a good team and the result in Monaco has not changed our attitude towards fighting for the championship. We had great pace in the rain and the dry but a combination of circumstances meant I was not able to fight Lewis. But now my focus is on Montreal and I want to win.”
Massa is particularly annoyed because his mistake gave away the lead and then his team blew the chance to fight for victory by choosing the wrong strategy. Hamilton, Massa and defending champion Kimi Raikkonen are tied on two wins apiece this year.
But McLaren’s racer has a threepoint lead over the Finn and is four ahead of the Brazilian after six of the 18 rounds.
Defeat in Montreal would be a bitter blow for Hamilton because the track has a special place in his heart. “We have good momentum right now and we are pushing to keep that going and to keep developing,” he said.
