Dutch-Chinese driver Ho-Pin Tung (24) will make his A1GP race debut this weekend following his successful rookie test. A1 GP team China offered the race seat to Ho-Pin who is anxious to represent China in the World Cup of Motorsport. Despite lack of experience in the A1 GP car, the current Formula 3 champion showed a lot of potential. Ho-Pin who recently tested a Formula Renault World Series car in Valencia left a good impression in the Sentul A1 paddock.
During the rookie sessions in which Confu Cheng’s replacement was introduced to the A1 GP car, he was 11th fastest. In the official practice session Ho-Pin improved his laptime to 1: 18. 9 which was good enough for place 15, only 0. 9 seconds adrift from the fastest lap of the day set by team France. Unfortunately Ho-Pin went off the track with new tyres before he could improve his laptime again.
Ho-Pin Tung: “I am very proud to represent team China in this fantastic race series. The team works very well, the rest of the weekend we will fine tune the car. The first practice was okay, the team worked hard to adjust the car to my driving style. My first impression is that it’s different compared to the Formula 3 car but I am still learning. With each run we find more speed and I can improve my lap time. It’s a pity I went off when I had a new set of tyres because this has costed me a very good lap time. It’s important to have as much track time as possible to learn more. Tomorow during free practice we will adjust some small things to the car before we will start qualifying”.
