“I think Bill will be successful in resolving the issues that have hampered the No. 36 team this year,” he said. But I think I have delivered what I can to the effort and looking at the total picture — what’s best for me, what’s best for the team — I believe this is the right time for me to consider other opportunities. I can assure you, we will do our best to build on the first half of this season and put the No. 36 in front in this second half of the 2007 season.” Tom Jensen, SpeedTV

Bill Davis Racing announced on Wednesday that Jeremy Mayfield will not return to the team next season.

Mayfield has been with Davis’ operation in 2006 specifically to be part of the team’s new two-car Toyota operation.

It has been exactly a year since Ray Evernham abruptly fired Jeremy Mayfield after Mayfield went public with his frustration with the team’s performance. Mayfield was replaced with Bill Elliott at Watkins Glen, and eventually Elliott Sadler.

A few weeks later, Mayfield and Bill Davis announced that they would team up for the 2007 Nextel Cup season with 360 OTC as the primary sponsor. But the season has been a disaster, and after failing to qualify for 13 of the first 21 races,

Mayfield was introduced as the driver of the No. 36 Camry at Bristol Motor Speedway last August in anticipation of Toyota’s first foray into the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series. But the second BDR team has not reached the potential both parties had anticipated.
“Jeremy has done all we asked of him and more as part of what has been an enormous challenge in 2007 for the entire BDR Cup program,” Bill Davis said in a released statement.  Lee Spencer, FOXSports.com

Ever since Mayfield made the Chase in ‘05, his preformance has continue to decline.
He was released before the end of the ‘06 season, and was hired to a sub-par team for ‘07.

Mayfield, who drives the No. 36 Toyota, didn’t make his first 2007 Cup start until the fifth race of the season at Bristol. He has qualified for only eight of 21 events, with an average finish of 32.8. His best finish of 23rd came at Talladega in April.

“I’ve been in this sport long enough to know that it takes time to bring a brand new car up to speed in what is probably the most competitive racing series in the world,” Mayfield said.  SEATTLEPI
