NASCAR: Merger With Gillett Secures The Future Of Evernham’s 350 Employees Evernham Motorsports


After winning a series-leading six races with driver Kasey Kahne last season, only to find his three Nextel Cup teams mired in 23rd, 28th and 38th two-thirds of the way through the season, Ray Evernham could be excused for frowning a bit.

But after announcing a merger with wealthy businessman and sports team owner George Gillett Jr. last week, Evernham said he’s optimistic of breaking out of his competitive funk.  Dave Rodman, NASCAR.COM

In the midst of a trying season for Evernham Motorsports, Ray Evernham spoke here Friday about the deal that was announced last week in which Evernham has partnered with Montreal Canadiens owner George N. Gillett Jr. to form Gillett Evernham Motorsports.

The partnership is the latest in a series of mergers of NASCAR Nextel Cup teams in recent weeks. The news should help secure the future of Evernham’s 350 employees, including Amherst native Kenny Bainbridge Jr. By Larry Ott, Buffalo News

Evernham Motorsports is expected to announce George Gillett Jr. as its new majority owner as early as Monday. Ray Evernham said Saturday that the deal is in place.

Ray Evernham has sold majority ownership of his NASCAR team to Montreal Canadiens owner George Gillett in a merger that has creates the new Gillett Evernham Motorsports, team officials announced Monday.

“It’s very exciting for me to deliver to sponsors and fans the opportunity to align with a worldwide sports leader,” Evernham said. “With the business acumen of the Gillett family and its sports brands, we’ve greatly expanded our reach.” Terry Blount, ESPN.com
