TOPEKA – Morgan Lucas will again be driving the Lucas Oil Speedway Top Fuel dragster for this weekend’s O’Reilly Summer Nationals at Heartland Park Topeka. He recently made his debut in his Lucas Oil Speedway livery at the St. Louis race to go along with the promotion of free admission to the Lucas Oil World Series of Off-Road Racing (WSORR) series event on Sunday, June 1 with a Gateway ticket stub receipt.
“It’s such a great racetrack,” said Lucas. “It’s famous among other dirt tracks in country and has been very successful. Among spectators, there’s not a bad seat in the house with excellent viewing all the way around. It’s very proud for me to represent the track and have Lucas Oil Speedway on my race car as more people discover the ‘Diamond of the Dirt Tracks’ in Wheatland, Mo.”
When Lucas gets down to business on Friday at Heartland Park Topeka, his purpose will be piloting his Top Fuel dragster into the highly competitive field and he knows it won’t be an easy task.
“We definitely need to turn it around,” said an anticipating Lucas. “Things will get better; it will just take some time. In certain areas we’re making progress, but this is a tricky race track in terms of what the weather will do. Sometimes it’s good and sometimes it’s bad. If it’s hot out, it will become greasy, but that can change from hour-to-hour, so you have to be ready for all of it. You have to bring your ‘A’ game to the table for sure. I prefer a hot track as we’ve able to do a good job of getting down those kinds of quarter-miles.”
Lucas is 47 points out of the coveted POWERade Top 10 and with only 10 races remaining before the Countdown to the Championship starts; Lucas has his eye on the prize of running for the Top Fuel title.
“That’s the bottom line in that we need to turn things around,” said Lucas. “We’ve got to put our nose to the grindstone and for me to get more involved. This team accelerates in so many ways in the positive, but we know we need to start gathering up points and that’s only going to happen is by winning rounds. We’ve got a lot of fans and sponsors we need to make happy. We’ll have to step it up.”
The start of the 12th annual O’Reilly Summer Nationals begins at the Heartland Park Topeka on Friday, May 30 with two nitro qualifying sessions starting at 4:30 p.m. (EDT) and 7:00 p.m. Saturday’s time trials start at 12:30 p.m. for the nitro classes followed by a second session at 2:30 p.m. The race starts promptly at 11 a.m. on Sunday, June 1.
