Former quadruple World Champion Alain Prost has put himself forward as a potential part of Formula One’s governance in a post-Max Mosley world.
But he said he would be interested if the ruling body dealt only with motor racing and was not involved in the global administration of all general motoring and road cars, including safety.
He would prefer to see the two roles separated.
He said: “It has always been my idea that they should separate the two things especially with so many big manufacturers now involved.
“If they did, then I may consider that I could be supporting the FIA on the sports side. If there was only the sporting side, then I could see my job.
He added: “I know what the FIA is, I know all about the World Motor Sport Council and the Formula One Commission.”
Prost said he had spoken out because of the “danger” of the apparently looming power struggle between the embattled Mosley and F1’s chief executive, Bernie Ecclestone.
“I would be worried because when you need to make the right decision in the next few weeks, there will be a big problem if there’s a big war,” he warned.
The Frenchman - who has expressed an interest in heading up a motorsport-only FIA - told Gulf Times that he was afraid that the row over Mosley’s extra-curricular use of prostitutes and sado-masochistic sexual practices could escalate, particularly following the weekend’s exchange of letters between the two protagonists and the heads of FIA associations worldwide, who will meet to debate Mosley’s future as president on 3 June.
“It could be a danger if you have a big fight for power,” he said of the war of words between two men who once worked closely to shape the future of F1, “Now is the right and perfect time to make a good decision for the future of Formula One.”
