Rahal: “If You’re Not With Ferrari Or Mclaren, You’re Not Going To Win”
May 21, 2008
“Maybe it’s just me, and I have to be careful saying this, but I don’t find Formula 1 interesting, ” Rahal said. “If you’re not with Ferrari or McLaren, you’re not going to win. Unless you go over there with a top team, that would be really cool. But if you don’t, I find nothing cool about running for 15th every weekend.
“I like racing here, ” he said. “You find most Europeans that come here like racing here better. I think it’s just because of the atmosphere. With the (Indy Racing League-Champ Car) merger, I do think open-wheel racing can get back to where it used to be or even bigger. ”
Rahal wants to stick with the IRL now and become an integral part of that growth. Thank heaven, because the IRL badly needs up-and-coming American drivers beyond Danica Patrick.
If the Andrettis reach the same conclusion that Graham Rahal has, there’s probably not much sense in Tony George trying to revive the United States Grand Prix at the Speedway. Interest in it faded noticeably and steadily after the first three years, and without an American driver to cheer for, the vast majority of American racing fans even in and around Indy are utterly indifferent to it.
