Scott Dixon is just a talented driver with 12career wins on the IndyCar circuit, including 92nd Indianapolis 500, and he’s just fine with that.
“I grew up racing these (open-wheel) cars and it’s something I love,” Dixon said at Langan’s on West 46th St. as he continued his victory tour. “I want to win a championship, and to win the Indy 500 makes me want it so much more.”
One driver Dixon doesn’t have to worry about competing against is Dario Franchitti, the champion last season who might be better known as Ashley Judd’s husband. He now races in NASCAR.
“At this point, you’d be crazy (to leave for NASCAR),” said Dixon, who used to drive go-karts as a youngster. “With the merger, and the influx of interest that’s going on in the IndyCar Series, I want nothing else but to stay. “
Another thing that Dixon is part of is a much more diverse field of drivers than NASCAR’s.
“Racing, for me, and for most people that watch it, it’s about personalities,” said Dixon. “You’ve got Helio, who’s very flamboyant, and Danica, who’s very determined and she’s a woman. I’m more of a quiet guy. I think, for me, it’s been flying under the radar. The attention has never been a big thing. I love racing and I love doing well.”
