The first auto race win of 2008. The name was a familiar one: Steve Kinser.
The 20-time World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series champion began the new year the way he has begun nearly every other year. This time, it was on Tuesday night at Tyrepower Parramatta City Raceway, which is some 11 hours ahead of us.
Australia. Go figure. Kinser, who’s been racing and winning since the Outlaws series started in 1978. The guy is superhuman. Tony Veneziano, World Of Outlaws spokesman and director of communications, says Kinser shows utterly no signs he’s going anywhere but victory lane.
“Steve Kinser is synonymous with sprint car racing,” Veneziano said. “He’s won 543 races since 1978. He won the championship the first season and he’s won 19 times since then.”
Racing is a tough sport to stay motivated for. It’s tough on the body – especially when you crash.
But consider what Kinser does and has done: Unlike NASCAR, where their grueling schedule puts them in a race more than 30 times a year, Kinser races 80-90 times, a ratio of racing almost one in four days every year.
