Cory Kruseman of Ventura, Calif. emerged with a victory in Saturday night’s 30-lap USAC National/Western Midget Car series feature event at Manzanita Speedway in Phoenix, Ariz. He officially led the final two laps in his JP Machine/ARP Spike/Esslinger, but the ending was more dramatic than it appears.

Kruseman was running behind race leader Tracy Hines exiting the final turn but Hines’ car ran out of fuel, relegating him to fourth place. After the race, Hines’ car was disqualified for failing to pass post-race technical inspection, restoring Kruseman as the leader on laps 29 and 30.

Darren Hagen, Jerry Coons Jr., Shane Cottle and Chris Rahe rounded out the”top-five” at the checkered flag.

Rahe officially led the first eight laps, while Garrett Hansen and Hagen also led laps before yielding to Kruseman at the end.

Hages is the early point leader in both the National and Western series which resume March 24 at Bakersfield, Calif. (Western) and April 11 at Kyle, Texas (National).
