Battle-tested speedster Chip Santee isn’t worrying about points in 2009. Instead, the Slatington-based throttle-jockey wants wins.
A points contender throughout his highly successful career, he earned track titles at Lehighton’s Mahoning Valley Speedway in 2002 and ‘07. This year he cut back on racing, allowing him to just go out and simply have fun and chase wins, not points.
After scoring a feature win early this year, Santee and crew were still fine-tuning, working hard all week, getting the equipment closer and closer, believing there was still room for improvement. It paid off last Saturday when he nabbed his second victory in seven starts this year at Mahoning.
Santee started from fifth in the 35-lap asphalt Modified main event and locked horns with early race leader Lou Strohl around the halfway point. On a Lap 20 restart, Santee powered past Strohl to become the race leader.
Santee later battled with raceway points leader and defending track champ John Bennett. They waged a superb war, but Santee extinguished every challenge. At the checker, Santee claimed career win 23 at the track.
