Grant Junghans led the distance in winning the final Big Dog Dakota Classic Tour feature, while Jay Noteboom wrapped up the title of the 20th annual series with his sixth place showing Friday night at Dacotah Speedway.
Junghans drew the pole start and pulled away from the IMCA Modified field from the start. The 30-lap contest ran without caution, eliminating any re-start possibilities but giving “B” race winner Matt Brack the opportunity to work his way through the pack and catch Ben Seidler for second late in the race.
The victory paid $1,200 and put Junghans on the ballot for the 2010 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational. Note boom had already become vote eligible by virtue of any of his three Dakota Tour wins. Noteboom also pocketed the lion’s share of cash and contingency awards given by IMCA and special series sponsors.
Junghans had a straightaway advantage over Seidler by the 15th circuit and caught up to the back of the field two laps later.
Never challenged, Junghans maintained his sizable lead to the checkers. Brack had too much distance to make up and Seidler settled for third after his long run in second. Chase Junghans moved up eight spots to finish fourth. Ricky Alvarado rounded out the top five.
Eleven weekly regulars joined the tour for the Mandan outing, boosting the car count for the finale to 56.
One hundred and three drivers from 10 states and three Canadian provinces competed in at least one tour event. A record 36 drivers competed at all six races.
Single-night car count records were set at four series stops, including an all-time tour record 70 on opening night at Nodak Speedway. The average of 60-plus entries a night was also the best in series history.
