Devin Raynard’s season went out with a bang, in more ways than one.
Leading Saturday’s IMCA modified feature at Estevan Motor Speedway and showing no signs of slowing down, Raynard suddenly exited down pit lane. With roughly half the race left to run, Raynard’s night was finished.
“It was working good,” he said of his No. 98 car, “then she just went ‘bang’ and I lost my drive shaft. She went ‘bang’ and that was it. All over.”
All over but the celebration perhaps.
After a few initial tense moments, Raynard discovered he still had enough of a cushion in the standings to claim the Speedway’s track championship regardless who eventually won the final points race of the year.
“When I got back to the pits I started counting cars to see what was going on,” he said. “It was a pretty nervous few nights before too, triple checking the car to make sure it was all working well. I guess it wasn’t.”
Raynard finished the season with 248 points, nine better than second-place Les McLenehan.
The race was eventually won by Davin Emmel, last year’s IMCA modified track champion and one of just six drivers to finish Saturday’s feature.
