Larry Shull is getting to live his dream for a second straight year.
The 31-year-old dirt bike racer has qualified for the largest amateur motocross race in the world, the 28th Air Nautiques/AMA Amateur National Motocross Championships at Loretta Lynn’s ranch in Tennessee. The event begins Saturday and runs through Aug. 8.
“It’s very exciting,” Shull said. “This year we’ve got a real good bike. Everything is working good. I’ve gotten a chance this year to practice for it. Last year I never really found time to practice for it because I was working to get the bike set up. My conditioning and training is better than it was last year.”

“The Amateur Nationals at Loretta Lynn’s is the event every motocross racer in the country wants to compete in,” event director Tim Cotter said. “A win at the Amateur Nationals can serve as a springboard to a lucrative professional motocross career.”
Shull competed in two area races, taking second at Bremen, Ga., and third in Livingston, Tenn.
The top seven at each regional advance to Loretta Lynn’s. Shull took sixth in a regional at Pell City.
Shull will compete on a Kawasaki 09 KX 450F.
“I really like the bike,” he said. “It’s basically dialed in to my liking. A lot of things have been modified on it for my ways and riding ability.”
