Ryan Dungey admits he doesn’t know too much about fellow motocross competitor Christophe Pourcel -at least off the track.
The pair share the points lead in the 250 class through eight of 12 rounds heading into Saturday’s Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship at Unadilla Valley Sports Center in New Berlin.
Dungey and Pourcel each have tallied 337 points, with Brett Metcalfe a distant third with 251. Dungey eked out the overall 250 victory three weeks ago in Washougal, Washington to move into a first-place tie.
Both Dungey and Pourcel are seeking their first AMA Motocross national title of any kind.
“This year’s been a lot of fun,” said Dungey, who earlier this year captured the AMA Supercross Lite West championship. “Ever since the beginning of the year, it’s been a tight points chase. I think at every minute you have to be on the top of your game.
While the 250 class points race will likely come down to the season’s final event in Delmont, Pa., the season championship in the series’ top class, the 450, is Chad Reed’s to lose.
“I’ve never won this championship, so it would mean a lot to win it. I’ve put in a lot of hard work into this.”
