The Ducati rider has become the second Italian rider to face such a probe in a week after an inquiry was opened into seven-time world champion Valentino Rossi.

Italy’s tax agency said Friday that Capirossi, who lives in Monaco, is being investigated for alleged undeclared earnings of $2.1 million (1.3 million euros) in 2002.

It comes after the agency announced on Wednesday that it had opened an inquiry into Rossi for allegedly not declaring $96.86 million (60 million euros) in revenues from sponsorship or his team between 2000-04. News.com

Italian motorcycling star Loris Capirossi has become the latest national sporting icon to be targetted for suspected tax evasion, it was reported in Rome on Saturday.

Italy’s tax agency believes that Capirossi, 34, does not reside principally in Monte Carlo as he claims, but in Italy, and that he owes them 12 million (US$16.4 million) in unpaid taxes between 1995-2002.

The Ducati rider was double world champion in the 125cc category in 1990 and 1991, and in the 250cc category in 1998
