Valentino Rossi edged out his Fiat Yamaha team-mate Jorge Lorenzo in the first practice session for the FIM MotoGP World Championship race in Spain.
Rossi topped the first free practice timesheets at the Montmelo circuit with a time of one minute 43.038 seconds ahead of Sunday’s Catalunya Grand Prix, with his team-mate Lorenzo second quickest with a time of 1:43.340.
Current championship points leader Casey Stoner was third quickest after setting a best time of 1:43.636.

Andrea Dovizioso (Repsol Honda) was fourth fastest and Randy de Puniet (LCR Honda) fifth. Former MotoGP champion Nicky Hayden (Ducati Marlboro) had one of his best sessions so far this season with the sixth best time. The Press Association
“We made some changes to our setting and already it feels much better to ride. This practice went very well for us, we were strong from start to finish and to be in first position feels good,” said Rossi who saw Stoner win in Italy last time out to take over at the top of the world championship standings.
“We have found out some very interesting things, especially about my feeling with the bike, but we need to keep on working.”
