Valentino Rossi Not Playing Down Championship Threat From Lorenzo & Pedrosa
Jorge Lorenzo has denied that the 2009 MotoGP World Championship is now a two-rider contest between himself and Fiat Yamaha team-mate Valentino Rossi.
After ten of 17 rounds, reigning six time MotoGP champion Rossi holds a 25 point lead over Lorenzo, with third placed Casey Stoner (Ducati) 37 points from the top. Yahoo! Eurosport
“I’m really excited about this race after what feels like a long time without one. It was good to have a bit of a break and I used the time to work on my fitness and to completely recover from the injuries I had after Laguna, in the gym and with my physiotherapist. The result is that I feel much better than I did in Germany and England and I’m excited to be getting back on the bike.”
“I like Brno and I have had good results in the past there, including three wins. This time my aim is to fight hard and get back on the podium.”
Lorenzo’s crew chief Daniele Romagnoli was also in confident mood ahead of the visit to the Czech Republic, adding: “A little break to recharge the batteries has been useful for us all before the last seven races. This has given Jorge the chance to improve his fitness after his Laguna Seca injuries and he will be in good shape for Brno.” Bikesport
UPDATE: August 13, 2009 11:21 am
World champion Valentino Rossi has insisted that he will not be sitting back at Brno this weekend at the MotoGP championship comes back from the summer break.
With his main rivals Jorge Lorenzo and Casey Stoner failing to score, the Italian opened up a 25-point lead at the top of the MotoGP standings with a fifth place finish at Donington Park three weeks ago, taking a major step towards a ninth MotoGP title.
But Rossi has refused to let up in the championship race and is taking nothing for granted, well aware of the threat posed by teammate Jorge Lorenzo and a resurgent Dani Pedrosa. Bikesport
He added: “Last time out at Donington wasn’t ideal but in the end it was a positive day for us and we now have a one-race buffer at the top of the championship.
“Despite this breathing space we can’t afford to relax for a minute because our rivals are very strong and I expect everyone to be at their best in Brno. It’s a great track for me and I took my first ever win there; I’m hoping for another good result this time.”
Lorenzo has targeted a podium finish as he looks to keep the pressure on Rossi.
