The man of the moment in MotoGP Jorge Lorenzo delighted the home crowd at the Jerez de la Frontera circuit in beautiful conditions on Saturday afternoon, as he repeated his 2008 pole for the Gran Premio bwin.com de España.
Lorenzo and his big Spanish rival Dani Pedrosa did battle for pole position during the 45 minute session, with the Fiat Yamaha rider eventually emerging on top with a 1’38.933 hot lap on the 18th of his 21 turns of the track. MotoGP.com
Casey Stoner of Ducati will start from third while Lorenzo’s teammate Valentino Rossi goes from fourth after timing 1:39.642 during the 45-minute session.
Lorenzo, who also took pole at the Jerez Circuit last year before finishing third, leads the overall standings with 41 points after a victory in Japan. Rossi, the defending series champion, has 40 points and Stoner is third with 38 after two races. USA Today
Randy de Puniet was fifth quickest on the LCR Honda as Rizla Suzuki’s Loris Capirossi rounded off the second row of the grid.
The third row will feature the Monster Tech 3 Yamaha of Colin Edwards, the Repsol Honda of Andrea Dovizioso and the San Carlo Gresini Honda of Toni Elias.
Capirossi’s Rizla Suzuki team-mate Chris Vermeulen rounded out the top 10.
But former world champion Nicky Hayden continued his poor form this season as he was only 16th quickest on the Ducati Marlboro bike. The Press Association
