Marlboro Ducati’s Casey Stoner has wiped the floor with his MotoGP rivals in the second free practice session at Phillip Island this morning, lapping more than seven-tenths of a second faster than the Monster Yamaha of Colin Edwards who was, in turn, chased hard by team-mate Ben Spies.

Stoner did his 1’31.243 lap was his final effort as the chequered flag came out while the Texas duo bumped 2010 World Champion Jorge Lorenzo back to fourth and nearly a second in arrears while his Fiat Yamaha team-mate Valentino Rossi could only finish eighth, some 1.4s off the pace.

Rossi was the first man on a still-damp track, tip-toeing his way around on wets and put in the first meaningful times as still-injured Dani Pedrosa also went out for a recce but only went round once before pulling back into his Repsol Honda garage, looking very stiff on the bike. BSN

Randy de Puniet (LCR Honda) was seventh in the session - the Frenchman had a crash at turn four but returned to the track to set his best time.

There were still some patches of damp on the track, which measured at 11ºC, and Marco Melandri (San Carlo Honda Gresini) appeared to catch some standing water on the edge of the asphalt when he went down at turn 11. Stoner and Dovizioso both ran on at points in the session as they negotiated some tricky conditions.

Continuing his return to action was Repsol Honda rider Dani Pedrosa who finished the session just over 3.5s off Stoner’s pace, but with his focus being on improving his comfort on his RC212V. Motogp.com
