Dani Pedrosa secured his second pole position of the year for Sunday’s Italian MotoGP as racing resumed after Valentino Rossi’s massive crash.
Pedrosa edged out championship leader Jorge Lorenzo with a fastest lap of one minute 48.819 seconds as the Spanish duo capitalised on Rossi’s absence.
Ducati duo Casey Stoner and Nicky Hayden took third and fourth place, with Colin Edwards in fifth.

Rossi was then taken to Florence to undergo an operation and looks likely to miss a couple of months of the season.
“It’s an injury more serious than we thought,” Doctor Macchiagodena, who attended to Rossi, said.
“Because its an exposed fracture with the bone protruding from the skin. We have reduced the fracture, which fortunately has not affected any blood vessels or nerves.
“It is serious, it could be a couple of months, but it is too early to say just yet. He (Rossi) remained calm, but having seen the images he could already see it was a nasty fall.” AFP
Edwards posted a best time of 1.49.683 to finish just under 0.3s off the front row and 0.054s ahead of Frenchman Randy de Puniet.
Monster Yamaha Tech 3 team-mate Ben Spies impressed again with the seventh quickest time. The Texan was slightly disappointed though that he wasn’t marginally faster and on the second row having logged a best of 1.49.861. Motorcycle News
