Australia’s 2007 world champion Casey Stoner, riding a Ducati, took pole position for Sunday’s Valencia Grand Prix on Saturday, the final race of the 18-leg world championship series.

The Australian - who earlier in the season battled against illness and poor form - was 0.331sec quicker than champion Jorge Lorenzo on a Yamaha while Italy’s 2008 250cc world champion Marco Simoncelli was third fastest on a Honda-Gresini.

It was the first time that Simoncelli was fast enough to get onto the front row of the grid in a MotoGp and he did so by edging out Italian legend Valentino Rossi. AFP

A late surge from Valentino Rossi (Fiat Yamaha) placed the Italian fourth (+0.531s on Stoner) as he battled to find enough pace to challenge near the top end, with American duo Nicky Hayden (Ducati Team) and Ben Spies (Monster Yamaha Tech 3) also taking places on the second row of the grid.

Completing the top ten in the session were Colin Edwards (Monster Yamaha Tech 3), Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda), Andrea Dovizioso (Repsol Honda) and Marco Melandri (San Carlo Honda Gresini). Motogp.com
