Casey Stoner’s lead in the MotoGP standings was reduced at the Italian Grand Prix where the defending world champion Jorge Lorenzo finished first and Andrea Dovizioso took second place.

Stoner started from pole but the Australian was passed first by Lorenzo with seven laps to go, then by Dovizioso on the final circuit.

Lorenzo, a Spaniard who rides for the Yamaha factory team, clocked 41min 50sec, 0.089sec at the Mugello circuit. Dovizioso, an Italian with the Repsol Honda team, crossed 0.997sec behind, with his team-mate Stoner 1.143 back.

Assen winner Ben Spies (Yamaha) and Gresini Honda’s Marco Simoncelli swapped fourth place repeatedly throughout the race before the American secured the position on the final lap.

Valentino Rossi gave his hordes of home fans something to smile about as he fought through from 12th on the grid to sixth for Ducati.

Hector Barbera was an excellent seventh on the Aspar Ducati, with Dani Pedrosa a cautious eighth for Honda on his return after a long injury lay-off.

Colin Edwards (Tech 3 Yamaha) and Nicky Hayden (Ducati) completed the top 10, despite the latter spearing through the gravel on the second lap. Alvaro Bautista got as high as sixth for Suzuki with an early charge before tumbling to 13th, while Cal Crutchlow retired his Tech 3 bike with tyre concerns. Yahoo! Eurosport UK
