Yamaha’s Jorge Lorenzo clinched his first MotoGP world championship after securing third place in the Malaysian Grand Prix on Sunday.
Teammate Valentino Rossi won the race in a time of 41 minutes, 3.448 seconds, ahead of fellow Italian Andrea Dovizioso, 0.224 seconds behind on a Honda.
Spain’s Lorenzo took third place, 6.035 seconds behind Rossi, but that was enough to win the title with three races remaining.
“Today is the happiest day in my life and we have to celebrate it,” Lorenzo said. “I started well at the front and was focused to do well in the race. But when the tires started slipping, I knew that I had to finish the race even though in third place.”

Ben Spies took fourth place for Monster Yamaha Tech 3, while fellow rookie Alvaro Bautista (Suzuki) won a thrilling four-way fight for fifth against Nicky Hayden (Ducati), Hiroshi Aoyama (Interwetten Honda) and Marco Simoncelli (Gresini Honda).
Bautista was the only GSV-R rider to finish with inured team-mate Loris Capirossi stopping out on track with technical problems. Colin Edwards and Aleix Espargaro joined Capirossi and Stoner in failing to reach the flag.
