Repsol Honda’s Casey Stoner has murdered his own record on the way to setting pole position for tomorrow’s Qatar MotoGP race, swapping times with team-mate Dani Pedrosa for the hour-long session as Britain’s Cal Crutchlow took eighth on his debut.
Stoner’s 1’54.347 is three-quarters of a second faster than his time from last year but Pedrosa wasn’t letting the Aussie have it all his own way, lapping at 1’54.342 right at the end of the session to keep Yamaha’s Jorge Lorenzo at bay who was six-tenths in arrears to take the final front-row spot.
Crutchlow showed some sparkling form to take fifth place not once but twice in the session on the soft tyre but was just knocked down a couple of places in the dying minutes.

Marco Simoncelli (San Carlo Honda Gresini Team) was the surprise of the session with a great lap to finish fourth fastest, just four hundredths slower than the current MotoGP World Champion. The top Ducati was yet again Héctor Barberá (Mapfre Aspar Team) who was sixth fastest, 1.086 off the time set by Stoner.
It was a disappointing showing for Andrea Dovizioso (Repsol Honda) compared to his team-mates and after his form in the previous practice sessions. The Italian not known for strong qualifying compared to race results, could only manage seventh with a deficit of 1.092 off the leading Repsol Honda. Motogp.com
