Jorge Lorenzo won his second straight Spanish Grand Prix on Sunday after Casey Stoner and Marco Simoncelli crashed on the wet track.

“It was a hard race but I am happy with the win,” Lorenzo said. “We had some luck, without the fall of Stoner we would not have won.”

The defending MotoGP champion was 19.339 seconds faster than fellow Spaniard Dani Pedrosa, who recovered after falling to ninth early on. American Nicky Hayden finished third, 29.085 seconds off the pace, at the 2.7-mile Jerez Circuit.

Rainy, slithery conditions helped give rise to a number of hair-raising incidents, including a spectacular fall on the seventh lap by six-time event winner Valentino Rossi of Ducati while pole-sitter Casey Stoner also came off his bike.

Ben Spies of Yamaha was another to find the going hard as he ended up in the gravel having stood second at one stage.

Marco Simoncelli of Honda also crashed, in his case after establishing a three second lead, as Lorenzo finished 19.4sec clear of 2008 winner Pedrosa in winning at the venue for the second straight year.

Rossi came in fifth ultimately but Stoner was unable to finish.

Hiroshi Aoyama of Honda took fourth for his best result in the class. AFP
