Gordon Rae has spent most of his life as a motor racing enthusiast and at the age of 78, he’s still not ready to give up the thrill of competition driving.
One of the oldest men in the UK to hold a racing license, he plans to be back on the track this coming season, competing against drivers young enough to be his grandchildren.
“I think they’re amazed when they see how old I am,” he said. “At one race a few years ago, there were a few of the young drivers around my car, and I found they’d put a sign on it saying it was sponsored by Age Concern.”
Using a wide repertoire of engineering skills, he built his first car in the 1950s - and it is still racing today in California.
He added: “I just feel that driving racing cars is one of the peaks of human achivement. It’s an extreme situation, a balancing of the forces, and I find it endlessly fascinating.”
