Formula One champ Jenson Button has vowed to carry on partying - even though he misses his model girlfriend’s birthday today.
The race ace revealed he was still celebrating after Sunday’s triumph in Brazil and said: “It’s a great feeling and I’m planning on enjoying it for a few more days.
“I’m not going to forget about it for a very, very long time.
But he revealed she was not in line for any special treats to mark his famous victory.
He grinned: “I have got her a gift but I’m not going to be able to see her on her birthday, which is a pity. I know it’s her birthday but nothing has changed.
“She’s certainly not getting a bigger gift just because I’m world champion!” Meanwhile, Jenson had singer Joss Stone and model Jodie Kidd in a spin yesterday as he took them for a test drive in a £100,000 Mercedes around a track at Bluewater shopping centre in Greenhithe, Kent. Mirror.co.uk
The new world champion’s first public appearance since claiming the title in Brazil on Sunday was not so much a day out for thrill seekers as for bargain seekers.
Button himself was on good form, as ever. The man is clearly running on adrenalin. Although he had a bed on his Embraer Legacy jet, he claimed not to have slept a wink and, after a quick shower to freshen up, he was answering the public’s questions with the same honesty and wide-eyed cheeriness that charmed the world in Brazil.
Rob Williams wanted to know how it felt to return to Britain as the new world champion. “I got a much better reception here than I got in Brazil, I can tell you,” he laughed in reference to the partisan Sao Paulo crowd who had tried to put him off his stride all weekend in favour of local boy Barrichello. “The Brazilian fans are pretty passionate. But I love Brazil. Brazil rocks.”
He did it all with such charm and openness that it was impossible not to revel with him. He repeated his assertion that he had grown up so much since the days of the skinny teenager who won a drive for Williams a decade ago. “I thought back then that I would destroy everyone in my first year,” he said. “I thought it would be a weekend job. But I have learnt how hard it is, how you have to make it your life. I never take it for granted now. I feel so privileged; it’s amazing to be doing a job I love so much.
“I didn’t know what to expect coming here but it’s great to see so many friendly faces. Thank you all so much for coming, I really appreciate it. I was obviously pretty tired this morning but arriving here woke me up as the reception was electric.” Telegraph.co.uk
“Happy to be world champion, Jenson?”, “Do you think your life will change, Jenson?” Button answered diligently with his handlers and sponsors looking on, his smile at the ready to seduce the cameras. He also had a few well-chosen and very well-intended words for the Brawn GP team who have worked miracles to fashion a car capable of winning a world championship against formidable odds.
